I delivered my daughter Kym Ella at Fairview Hospital on September 22, 2012 my doctor was Leslie Bicanovsky upon leaving the hospital I was informed that I needed a pediatrician to see before my release and was given Dr. Isabilita Guadiz.
To my knowledge everything was fine and my daughter was healthy.
My first visit with Doctor Guadiz was September 25, 2012 for her discharged checkup; after her checkup I was informed that she needed to go to Cleveland to the genetic testing center for an abnormal test result for thyroid: which was the first incorrect information, I went to the UH Genetic testing center and she was actually tested for a metabolic dis-order with Dr. Mc Candless which resulted in a false positive and she was fine.
Second visit with Dr. Guadiz was October 6, 2012 because i was concerned with my daughters excessive sweating and her breathing, also during bowel movements she would be in pain, she was checked and I was informed that I had a sweaty baby
I took her home and the problem began to worsen she was constantly sweating in the car seat when we would drive places to the point of her clothing was soaked, with puddles of sweat in her ears and screaming a screeching cry that would indicate that she was in pain, I called and made another appointment was seen October 20, 2012 when her father and I took her back to Dr. Guadiz and was informed that she may have acid reflux and prescribed Ranitidine, given some vitamins, for what she called esophageal reflux
I took her home again and the medicine would cause her to projectile vomit so I stopped giving it to her and the problem continued to exist, more sweating, more episodes of uncontrollable screeching, so I called again and was told i could not be seen until November 26, 2012 by this time she was having lung retractions and had stopped eating when i would give her the breast she would push it away and begin to cry uncontrollably. On this day she was examined because she also had developed a rash. She noticed that she had Tachypnea and ordered a chest x-ray I was told that the x-ray was normal, again she is a sweaty baby given some stool softeners told to watch her and sent home again.
i knew something was wrong with my daughter and made another appointment because these symptoms began to worsen made another appointment on December 4, 2012 informed her of my daughter breathing, sweating, outburst and that her stomach was sunken in when she breaths and not eating, As I monitored her respiratory rate it was in the 80 to 120's and she did a pulse soc on her again was sent home with no assistance.
I called and made another appointment which was January 11, 2012 and requested another doctor to examine her this day she did not see Dr. Guadiz and was seen by Dr. Bashur (not sure if this is the correct spelling) Dr. B saw her listen to her heart witnessed her retractions told me she would be right back and went and made a call, when she returned she informed me that I needed to go to Cleveland Clinic ASAP, I asked her was she being admitted she said yes they have a bed for her ready, only telling me that she needed further examination. I packed her up and went to CCF (Cleveland Clinic Foundation) went to admission and was admitted to the M bldg. bed 2.
After 3 to 4 hours at CCF we were informed that our daughter had ALCAPA stands for Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery. It is a very rare heart defect where the left coronary artery forms abnormally. Instead of connecting to the aorta, as in a normal heart, it connects to the pulmonary artery.
We were also informed that she only had 5% heart functions and was in very severe condition, we were also informed that she had been having heart attacks for 3 months which caused damaged to her heart cells, we were informed that her heart was so enlarged that you could not see her diaphragm, her body fluids were overflowed to her lungs, we were moved to PICU and schedule for open heart surgery on January 14, 2013- during the 3 days in PICU she was given additional drugs to prepare her for surgery.
On January 14, 2013 open heart surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Stewart she was returned to PICU and had some hurdles to overcome, she had blood transfusion, her lung collapsed, she was on a breathing machine, multiply meds etc... We were in PICU from January 11, 2013 to February 12, 2013
we were re-admitted on February 18, 2013 to February 22, 2013 for complication.
In the interim also she was given a cardiac cath on 2/6/2013 because it was discovered she has total occlusion of the coronary artery which is closed and to date it is still closed the cardiac team has implemented a plan that consist of 7 medicine to compensate the heart but it is suggested that additional surgeries may be needed.
I have her medical records up until her last discharge date, the has been additional procedures since then on March 1, 2013 a PET scan was done and the results indicated and confirmed the severe scar tissue damage done to her heart CCF is creating an additional plan:
After being informed that Kym Ella had total occlusion of the left coronary it was suggested that another surgery be performed after another Cath be performed but this surgery consisted of going through the good ventricle to try to release the closed one and that was not a surgery I was willing to subject our daughter to. This was suggested by Dr. Preito they had no studies on this condition to perform the surgery therefore I sought out to locate an additional hospital.
I sent her records to several hospitals and was contacted by Cincinnati Children’s hospital and spoke to Dr. Tom Kimble who reviewed her situation this is was in April after reviewing the records he suggested that I meet with Dr. David Morales I meet with him at the end of April considered his suggestions. The process that was suggested was an option for us and scheduled an additional surgery for May 3, 2013 and was in the hospital until June 5, 2013
She has follow ups once a month at Cincinnati Children Hospital and she also has a cardiologist at Akron Hospital.
